ANIMATION FAN ALERT! CHOOSE YOUR WINNERS AT THE BRITISH ANIMATION AWARDS PUBLIC CHOICE SCREENINGS

Animation-lovers across the land have the chance to decide the winners in three categories of the British Animation Awards in the Public Choice Screenings which start showing in cinemas around the country from 23rd January.
Playing at 20 cinemas until the end of February three specially selected programmes will feature an eclectic mix of films in three categories: music videos, commercials and short films.  After each programme the audience will be asked to pick their preferred choice in each category.
With over 45 films to choose from The Public Choice offers the audience an astonishing array of stop frame, CGI and 2D animation.  The hand-picked selection includes works by newly graduated and established artists and covers a wide range of topics from the serious through to the light-hearted.  From Barry JC  Purves’ Tchaikovsky – An elegy following the composer’s  life and work to Francesca’s Adams film Bertie Crisp which takes humorous look at the people who live on caravan sites and is voiced by Mark Benton, Kathy Burke and Tamsin Greig.
The selection includes a quartet of films from the Get Well Soon series: a series of animated conversations recorded in an East End pub where the subjects recount their various personal injuries. Multi-award winner Darren Walsh using his unique stop frame technique with masks to animate a local character’s run in with some skateboarders. Kim Alexander’s Zoe follows a drunken injury while dressed as a chicken, Bill Elliott’s Tarrant describes the hidden dangers to be found playing with a Chris Tarrant games machine at your local and Phoebe Boswell’s Impaled Leg recalls drinking games at Edinburgh College of Art and a misguided shortcut.
Hoping to weave its way into the audiences hearts Spin Spun Span takes a surreal journey through the cotton factories of the North West, and Fiona Geilinger creates a transformation as a woman chooses to abandon her identity by absorption into the fabric of her surroundings in Wallpaper. Whilst in Kibwe Tavares’ Robots of Brixton the inner-city location has become a disregarded area inhabited by London’s new robot workfors.
Gorillaz, Dry Riser, Big Scary and London Elektricity are amongst the artists featured in the music promos a category.  And commercial contenders include Nokia’s films Dot and Gulp by Sumo Science and Aardman Animations, which hold the records for the smallest ever stop frame puppet and the largest ever stop frame set, and Pilsner Urquell Legends features an abstract retelling, entirely formed in paper of the lagers creation.
Held every two years, the BAAs are the most prestigious awards in animation and the only ones to celebrate and recognise British animation talent across all mediums, with past winners including Nick Park, Tim Burton and David Shrigley.
Director Jayne Pilling says: “Britain is a power house when it comes to producing exceptional talent across all styles of animation. The Public Choice selection offers a snapshot of some of the outstanding pieces of work created over the past couple of years and gives the public a chance to vote for their favourites.”
Public Choice screenings start on Monday 23rd January and will play at 20 locations across the country on various dates until the end of the February.  Full details are detailed below. The British Animation Awards night will be held on March 15th at the BFI in London.
